Free TakeHome API

Updated Updated for 2026 tax law

Put 2026 paycheck, tax and salary math in your app with one HTTP call. The TakeHome API returns JSON from the same engines that power our calculators — take-home pay for all 50 states and DC, federal brackets, UK salary after tax, 401(k) and compound-interest projections, mortgage and loan payments, CPI inflation, state cost of living and BLS wages by occupation. No API key, open CORS, free.

Quick start

  1. Pick an endpoint below. Every endpoint lives under https://takehome.tools/api/v1/.
  2. Send a GET with query parameters, or a POST with a JSON body (Content-Type: application/json) — same parameters, same response.
  3. Read the result from data. Show meta.attribution with a link to meta.source where people see the numbers.

Rate limits and caching

  • 120 requests per minute per IP address. Over the limit you get 429 with Retry-After.
  • No API key, no sign-up. CORS is open (Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *), so you can call it from the browser.
  • Deterministic GET responses are cached at the edge for 24 hours (Cache-Control: public, s-maxage=86400); cache them on your side too.
  • Random generators and POST responses are never cached.
  • Need more? Email us — we're happy to raise limits for reasonable use.

Attribution

The API is free. In return we ask (but don't enforce) a visible credit with a followed link to the page in meta.source wherever you show results:

<a href="https://takehome.tools">Powered by TakeHome</a>

OpenAPI spec

A machine-readable OpenAPI 3.1 description of every endpoint is at https://takehome.tools/api/v1/openapi.json — import it into Postman, Insomnia, or a client generator.

Terms

Use of the API is covered by our Terms of Use. Results are estimates for information only — not tax, legal or financial advice — and TakeHome is provided as is, without warranty. Don't resell raw access, hammer the endpoints, or present the numbers as your own engine's. We may change or rate-limit the API; breaking changes get a new version (/api/v2).

Frequently asked questions

Is the TakeHome API really free?

Yes. There is no key, no sign-up and no paid tier. Calls are limited to 120 per minute per IP address, and we ask for a visible “Powered by TakeHome” link where you show the numbers.

How accurate are the paycheck numbers?

The API runs the same 2026 engine as our calculators: IRS brackets and standard deductions from Rev. Proc. 2025-32, 2026 FICA (6.2% Social Security up to the wage base, 1.45% Medicare plus 0.9% additional), and each state's 2026 brackets and payroll taxes. Results are annualized estimates; real withholding depends on the W-4 and the employer's payroll system.

Can I call the API from the browser?

Yes. CORS is open (Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *), so fetch() works from any website. Deterministic GET responses are cached at the edge for 24 hours, so repeated calls are fast.

Do I have to show attribution?

It's requested, not enforced. Every response includes meta.attribution and meta.source — a short credit with a link to the matching calculator page is all we ask.

Is there an OpenAPI spec?

Yes, at /api/v1/openapi.json (OpenAPI 3.1). Import it into Postman or Insomnia, or generate a client from it.
